CURRENT CHARACTERS: Luke Triton
CHARACTERCHARACTER NAME: Toboe
SERIES: Wolf's Rain
CANON POINT: After his death
LOSS: Being able to visualize paradise, the place that all wolves are supposed to find. Every time he tries, he'll imagine something terrible and frightening instead.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Toboe's considered the kid of the group, still a juvenile wolf while the rest of the group are all adults. This reflects in his behavior too, as he's more energetic, playful, inexperienced, and especially naive. He has trouble fending for himself, can be a little too trusting of others, and likes being coddled. He also has a childlike arrogance to him as well, claiming that he's fine when he's hurt or tired and pushing himself even when he needs to rest. He also hates being treated like a kid, and will get angry and protest whenever the group feels like they should slow down on his behalf.
Toboe is also the most timid of his pack, freezing up with fear or hesitating before he does something dangerous. He's scared of cats and when he first tries to find food on his own he's easily chased away after being pecked by crows. When confronted with a wolf hunter, he doesn't try to fight or run, but stands there bracing himself to get shot. He'll often need a little push first before trying to make a risky jump and when one of his pack gets captured, instead of following or howling for help, he runs back to tell the others instead, which proves that Toboe doesn't like to confront danger head-on.
There are times when Toboe overcomes his timid nature and risks his life, such as when his pack was under attack from a giant walrus. While at first he's too scared to move up, he suddenly snaps when he sees his friends getting hurt and charges forward to sink his teeth into the walrus, only letting go when the walrus finally bleeds to death. Another instance is when he and Tsume are captured by Jagura and they realize that Cheza could be hurt, which prompts him and Tsume to throw themselves against the bars of their cell to break free, even knowing that doing so could seriously injure them in their desperation to escape.
Unlike most wolves, Toboe is perfectly content living as a domesticated animal. Having lived with a human all his life, he's reluctant to have to live in the wild. After Granny dies, Toboe starts to seek out a new owner as a replacement when he comes across a human girl, and immediately tries to win over her affection. His idea of paradise involves seeing Granny again and having her take care of him, and he even temporarily leaves his pack in order to live with native humans who live alongside animals as equals, to which Toboe claims is his idea of a paradise. Even up until his death he keeps trying to find an owner that will take care of him, going as far to tell the wolf hunter that tried to kill him in the beginning, that he wanted him to go to paradise with them so that he could be by his side. He even offers the wolf hunter his body heat when Toboe finds him freezing to death in the snow, knowing that the wolf hunter would try to kill him if he woke up with him there. Also, having lived the life of a domesticated animal, Toboe is more willing to approach a human and tends to be more trusting and forgiving towards them.
Out of all of the members of his pack, Toboe is the most social of the group which has a lot to do with the fact that he hates to be alone. In fact he hates to be alone so much that he immediately latches onto a fellow wolf, Tsume, when said wolf rescues him. Despite Tsume wanting nothing to do with him, Toboe follows him around and tries to befriend him anyway. Likewise, the human girl he meets while trying to find food, he follows around and tries to worm his way into being her pet when she feeds him. Because of his need to always be around others, he tends to be the glue that holds the rest of the pack together. Whenever the pack tries splitting up, Toboe is usually the only one who gets upset about it and tries to talk them into working together again. Because of this, Toboe doesn't care whether he's in the company of wolves or humans, as long as he has others by his side.
ABILITIES: Human Form: Toboe can create an illusion to make himself look like a 14-year-old boy to blend in with human society. It's a pretty solid illusion for the most part, except that in order to use his "hands" he actually has to use his teeth which can sometimes break the illusion, and he still casts the shadow of a wolf when he walks.
Telepathy: Wolves can speak to other humans and animals without moving their mouths. While in their human form, it just looks like they're speaking normally.
Increased strength/endurance: The wolves in Wolf's Rain tend to be a lot stronger then normal wolves, even being able to withstand injuries that would normally be fatal and being able to jump seemingly impossible distances.
Fast healing: During a full moon, wolves like Toboe can heal a lot quicker then normal, taking only a few hours recover from severe injuries.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Toboe wasn't sure what he was expecting when he woke up. Part of him didn't expect to wake up at all considering what happened to him. Another part of him hoped he'd wake up in Paradise and his Granny would be waiting to greet him in a field of lunar flowers.
Instead, he woke up in a room. A comfortable room, but one he didn't recognize. Maybe he didn't die after all, he wondered hopefully. Maybe Kiba, Hige, and Tsume brought him here and were just waiting for him to recover from their last fight. And then they could keep looking for Paradise like they planned and there wouldn't be anymore interruptions. That's probably what happened, right?
However, as Toboe opens the door to his room, he sees a hallway with several doors. All with different names on them. The names didn't make much of a difference to him, he couldn't read them anyway. But it was alarming to wake up in such a big place with so many rooms.
"Tsume? ...Kiba? Hige?" he glances around nervously, trying to take in all the new sights and smells. There were a lot of human smells, maybe he was captured by Nobles? Only Nobles lived in places this big, he thinks. But if that's the case, it wouldn't have been so easy to leave the room he woke up in.
None of this made any sense. He wasn't as tough as Kiba or any of the other wolves, that wound he got right before he passed out wasn't something he would've been able to survive. So what was this place? If it was Paradise, would a place like this have so many rooms and doors?
It isn't until he reaches a nearby window and peers outside that he realizes that maybe this
was the place he was searching so hard for.
"There's so many trees. And grass...and flowers! Is this really Paradise?"
His jaw hangs open as he surveys the landscape. It was absolutely beautiful outside - no snow, no dying plants, even the people outside looked really happy. Maybe if he looked hard enough, he'd even see his Granny waiting for him outside. He doesn't waste any more time looking, instead searching for the nearest stairs so that he could join everyone too.
FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE: Here!INTENT: Toboe's canon live is pretty darn terrible. I'd like to play him in a setting where he actually does get a taste of the things he wanted in canon.
